Russell 2000 is a benchmark index for small-cap stocks, mutual funds, and ETFs.
The Index
Russell 2000 is considered an important US stock market index for measuring the performance of small-cap stocks. The index includes around two thousand small-cap companies, and it is a subset of the Russell 3000 index. Note that the Russell 3000 includes more than 95% of all investable US markets.

- The index started in 1984 and consists of about 2,000 small-cap companies
- It is a popular benchmark for mutual funds and ETF investors
- Russell 2000 accounts for about 2/3 of the Russell 3000 index but only 7% of the total market value
- The general public can invest in the Russell 2000 via the index ETFs and trade it through futures and CFDs
- The P/E ratio in early 2024 was x25.6
- The dividend yield of Russell 2000 in early 2024 was 1.50%

Calculating the Index
Russell 2000 is calculated based on a market-capitalization-weighted basis. In other words, the participation of each company in Russel 2000 is based on the company’s market value.
- $2,700 million is the average market value for companies listed on Russell 2000
- $770 million is the median market cap for companies listed on Russell 2000
- During the spring of each year (May and June), there are changes in the small-cap index
